Adding Academics to Your Day

parents_with_children_in_carSummer is busy and it is often difficult to fit extra support for academics into one’s schedule. So it is time to think creatively and turn every family activity into a learning activity. If you are driving your children to and from activities it is easy to incorporate math and reading games.

For younger children you can play a number recognition game and have the children call out numbers and letters found on other car license plates. For older children you can have them add the numbers of each license plate. You can add a color matching game and even a recall and sequence game: “When we first came out of our driveway we saw a red car. What color did we see next? How many of the same color cars did we see this trip?”

Turning everyday occurrences into academic games is fun for the entire family. My children, even though, they are now well into adulthood continue to play “road games” each and every time we get into the car. From multiplication tables to different alphabet games our family finds playing games a great way to pass the time and have fun.

For teens and adults, a game that my family continues to enjoy today is an alphabet game.  The goal is to be the first to collect words that are sequenced in alphabet order from A through Z. Words that are posted on trucks, signs, or any building seen from the highway can be collected.  The first person to call out the word owns it and any other member playing the game must wait to find their own word. The winner is the first person to have collected a word for each corresponding letter of the alphabet in sequence.

She is currently employed with the Poway Unified School District and she delivers services to both groups and individuals in the transition program working with adults eighteen-years-- twenty-two years of age. Her current responsibilities include organizing and running a healthy relationship program with both men and women with intellectual disabilities.
